The Hundred Thousand Trees Program
Cebu Mitsumi's "Hundred Thousand Trees Program" transitions the company's ordinary Tree Planting activity into a sustainable and more impactful Tree Growing program that helps address the current climate crisis.
Recognizing the role of Trees to help mitigate Climate Change, Cebu Mitsumi, Inc., crafted and "The Hundred Thousand Trees Program" which was officially launched by President Tatsuya Mori, in time of the company's 2023 Family Day event on June 10, 2023.
The "Hundred Thousand Trees" is a modified and intensified collective program of the company's existing three (3) Tree Planting activities, such as :
- Conventional Tree Planting - standard way to plant trees, either at the vacant lots inside the company vicinity and at the barren mountain areas or watershed areas
- Mangrove Planting - planting of mangrove propagules in the coastal areas, specifically at the company's adopted mangrove community - Sitio Tawsan.
- Adopt-a-Tree - distribution of fruit-bearing tree seedlings to those who wants to plant a tree at home and accepts the responsibility of a Tree Parent.
The program targets to grow the number of planted trees, from the average 5,500 trees per year (based on year 2011 up to 2022 result, with a running total of 55,272 planted trees), up to at least 20,000 trees per year starting year 2023 onwards, in order to achieve its medium-term goal of an accumulated total of 100,000 trees by year 2025, and to further progress the count to 200,000 planted trees by year 2030 for its long-term goal.
On its first year of implementation under FY2024, as a result of the 12 various Tree Planting activities delivered within the term, a total of 20, 720 trees were planted (that's 103.6% achievement to the 20,000 target for the year). It massively involved a total of 3,124 volunteers composed of top management, employees and their family members, the local government employees, organization partners and other stakeholders.
The program's first year of success was a testament to the effectiveness of its campaign slogan "Each One, Plant One" which promotes environmental awareness and strongly encourages everyone's involvement and contribution to the program. Another contributory factor is the involvement of the relevant local government units like the Office of the Mayor, the City Agriculture Office (CagSo) and the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), by virtue of a signed Memorandum of Agreement that binds both parties' commitment to the program.
Recognizing the numerous environmental benefits of trees, the Hundred Thousand Trees Program, most importantly, contributes to Carbon Sequestration which perfectly aligns to the global MinebeaMitsumi goal of achieving carbon neutrality by year 2050.
